A cold evening on the Watson Fuels Terrace

On Sunday 5th Feb, staff from heating oil distributor Watson Fuels' Cullompton depot watched Exeter Chiefs take on Bath Rugby in the LV Cup from the vantage point of the Watson Fuels Terrace at Sandy Park. The group made themselves at home on the Watson Fuels terrace, with supporters for both sides amongst them. Come the final whistle it was the Bath fans that went away happy, with the final score 31-3 to Bath.

Extreme cold weather on the way

According to the latest European weather reports, winter is set to finally arrive. The report states that an extreme cold weather front is moving west over Europe from Siberia, extending as far as the UK in early February.  Apparently temperatures over central Europe are expected to fall as low as minus 15 C.
This weather change will be of particular interest to heating oil users, who should check the levels of their oil tanks and make sure they have adequate oil to see them through the anticipated cold spell.
This significant drop in temperature would see the end of the mild weather experienced recently across the UK which has caused some unexpected flowering and unseasonal sprouting of bulbs.  Gardeners will also need to keep an extra watchful eye out for heavy frosts.
The report is unclear as to how long the spell will last or indeed exactly when it will hit the UK, so the advice is to be prepared for it now.

Late heating oil purchases precarious, minister warns

Heating oil users warned that a last minute order is "inherently risky", forargyll.com reports. Energy minister Fergus Ewing made the calls after visiting a heating oil manufacturer, noting the conditions experienced last year and encouraging people not to allow the same to happen again. With much of the UK blanketed in snow this time last year, deliveries of all commodities ground to a halt, including heating oil. This meant that those households had to go without until the deliveries could make their way in, making many wish they had made the purchase a little earlier. This continued all the way to Christmas for some, a trend that Ewing urged homeowners not to repeat this time around.Speaking to johnogroat-journal.co.uk, Ewing suggested: "Over the past year, energy companies have been working intensively with their customers to avoid that happening again yet at the moment, demand looks to be lower than the same time last year."The weather is admittedly mild at the moment but, while no-one can say with any certainty what this winter might bring, we all know it can turn suddenly. I support the energy companies' buy early campaigns, and would encourage anyone who uses heating oil or liquefied petroleum gas to stock up now while suppliers have spare delivery capacity and ahead of any adverse weather conditions this winter."
